MAREN is not-for-profit Internet Service Provider. Beyond Internet Service Provision, MAREN provides various value added services in support of higher education and research. Such services include eduroam, eduVPN, academic interconnectivity, capacity building for ICT technical staff, hosting educational and research systems etc.

UbuntuNet Alliance is also an ICT Service Provider for the Higher Education and Research Sectors and UbuntuNet Alliance is a Regional Research and Education Network., MAREN is a National Research and Education Network (NREN) MAREN therefore operates at National Level in Malawi connecting higher education and research institutions while UbuntuNet Alliance operates in the Eastern and Southern Africa Region connecting national research and education networks. UbuntuNet Alliance, therefore, does not admit and connect higher education and research institutions.

Currently, MAREN connects any post-secondary institutions, research institutions and teaching hospitals.

MAREN’s Secretariat is based at the University of Malawi Central Office in Zomba whereas the Network Operations Centre is at the College of Medicine in Blantyre.

An institution makes an application through the MAREN Secretariat.
