Success Story – MUBAS (The Malawi Polytechnic)

Poly ICT building

In an effort to achieve its vision which is; To be a centre of excellence in the provision of scientific and technological education, training and research for sustainable development, The Polytechnic, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Malawi migrated a while back to the digital world for efficiency.

The college just as any other institituion of research has depended on the use of Internet-based services as they provide a rich resource of knowledge that are beneficial for its students and staff and are available at any convenient time.

The Polytechnic, which is located in Blantyre, has over the years been struggling to provide Internet services that are reliable, stable, affordable and sufficient to its ever-increasing numbers of members of staff and students.
The cost of bandwidth has been so high that the college has for many years been unable to provide enough for the staff members and students.

The recent introduction of MAREN as its new Internet Service Provider has immediately made most of the college’s connectivity worries be stories of the past. The college is currently able to purchase four times more bandwidth currently enough for its needs for the same budget used with its previous ISP.

Members of staff and students are now able to access information easily from different resources including bandwidth hungry sites like You Tube which have been almost unusable previously.

In addition, with this development, the college has comfortably been able to introduce online learning delivery mode of teaching during the Corona Virus pandemic period. Usage of facilities like virtual meetings is now an everyday thing as meetings would last uninterrupted all the time.

With enough bandwith, there is currently an ongoing project that is installing student WIFI access points across its campus. Previously, students were only able to access the Internet from computer laboratories and the Library.
According to a press release which was released on March 16, 2021 by the College, the project is expected to be completed within a period of six weeks.

This arrangement shall make it convenient for students as they will be able to access information, attend online classes and write assignments in the comfort of their hostels any time.
